Trees in Central Indiana do not fail randomly. When a straight-line wind event moves across Marion and Hamilton counties in June and leaves a trail of split trunks and limbs through roofs, the trees it took were, almost without exception, the trees that already had something wrong with them. The wind is the trigger. It is very rarely the cause. Which means most storm damage is genuinely preventable, and the window to prevent it is now, not the morning after.

The defect that fails most often is the co-dominant union with included bark. Where a tree forks into two stems of roughly equal size and bark has grown down into the crotch between them, the two stems are not actually joined — they are pressed together with a wedge of dead bark in the middle. There is no structural wood connecting them. Under a hard side load, that union splits straight down the trunk and takes half the tree with it, usually onto whatever is beneath. Fishers, Avon, and the newer Westfield subdivisions are full of these, because the trees builders planted twenty years ago all matured together and almost none of them were structurally pruned when young. Caught early, a competing leader can be pruned back or the union can be cabled. Caught late, it is a removal.

Deadwood is the second one, and it is the cheapest problem on this list to fix. Dead limbs are already detached in every meaningful sense — the tree has abandoned them and is simply waiting for something to knock them loose. That something is a fifty mile-an-hour gust, and the limb goes wherever gravity sends it. Deadwooding an ageing oak or maple is straightforward, relatively inexpensive work, and it removes the most likely projectile before the storm arrives rather than after.

Then there is root-zone damage, which is the one nobody sees coming because it is under the ground. Trees are anchored by a root plate that is much wider and much shallower than people imagine — mostly in the top eighteen inches of soil and extending well past the drip line. Trench through it for an irrigation line, compact it under a construction vehicle or a parked truck, bury it under fill dirt, or pile mulch high against the trunk, and you damage the anchoring and the fine feeder roots without leaving a single visible mark on the tree. Freeze-thaw cycles through an Indiana winter work the saturated soil loose on top of that. A tree with a compromised root plate can be perfectly healthy in the canopy and still tip over whole in a storm, with its root ball lifting out of the ground like a trapdoor.

Newly exposed trees are the risk almost nobody thinks about. A tree that spent thirty years growing in the middle of a stand was sheltered by its neighbours, so it never needed to build the trunk taper and root strength that a solitary tree develops. Clear the trees around it — for a subdivision, a fence line, a new build — and that tree is suddenly standing alone in wind it has never experienced and is not equipped for. This is a real and consistently under-appreciated hazard on the more open ground around Brownsburg and Plainfield, and it is why we always ask what has recently been cleared nearby.

So the pre-season checklist is short and specific: get the deadwood out of your mature trees; get any co-dominant union with included bark looked at and pruned or cabled; get limbs pruned back off the roof, because a branch that rubs shingles in a breeze will strip them in a storm; and do not let anyone park, trench, or dump fill inside the root zone. If a tree has ever been topped, be aware that its regrowth is weakly attached by definition and is a leading candidate to come apart. Cabling and bracing, done properly, is a genuine option that can buy a valuable mature tree decades — it is not a trick, it is standard practice, and it is far cheaper than losing the tree and the roof together.

And when the storm does come anyway: stay away from the tree. Never approach a limb hung up in a canopy, never touch a tree that is on or near a power line — assume every downed line is live and call the utility first — and do not put a ladder up to a broken limb. Storm-damaged trees are under enormous stored tension, and a limb bent under load releases with real violence when it is cut wrong. This is the single most dangerous work in the trade and it is not a homeowner job.
